Latina teen Michelle sharing her story about mental health, confidence and social media pressure

Being a teenager has never been simple. But today’s teens are growing up in a world where social media can make comparison almost impossible to escape.

What’s trending? Who is going viral? Am I pretty enough? Do I have enough friends? Why doesn’t my life look like theirs?

For Latina teens navigating identity, family, friendships, school, social media and expectations about how they should look or who they should become, those pressures can feel especially overwhelming.

Michelle, a Quinceañeras Magazine Cover Girl and participant in our Expo Quinceañera Models program, recently shared her own experience as part of the You Matter More Than You Know campaign, an initiative focused on supporting Latino youth.

The Pressure to Fit In as a Teenager

Michelle describes one of the hardest parts of being a teenager today as constantly seeing what is trending and viral and feeling pressure to be like everyone else.

She remembers questioning whether she was good enough, pretty enough or whether she truly fit in.

What makes her story especially important is that those feelings weren't necessarily visible to everyone around her. From the outside, it could look like she was getting along with everyone, while internally she was experiencing something very different.

That is an important reminder for parents, friends and other teens: we don't always know what someone is going through based on what we see from the outside or on social media.

Social Media, Comparison and Teen Confidence

Social media can be fun, creative and a place to connect, but it can also create an endless opportunity for comparison.

A teenager may see another girl's appearance, clothes, friends or experiences and assume that person is happier or more confident.

Michelle eventually began looking at comparison differently.

Through meeting other girls, she realized that girls she considered beautiful and confident sometimes struggled with many of the same insecurities she did. That realization helped her question the negative way she was seeing herself.

Sometimes we offer other people kindness and understanding that we don't offer ourselves.

Finding Confidence Through Community

For Michelle, joining the Quinceañeras Magazine community became one part of building her confidence.

Through the Expo Quinceañera Models program, she met other girls, learned how to walk on stage, participated in new experiences and began doing things she once couldn't picture herself doing.

And that is an important part of what we want the program to represent.

A quinceañera dress can be beautiful, but the girl wearing it is always more important than the dress.

Our goal is to create an environment where girls can meet one another, try something outside their comfort zone, discover new abilities and leave feeling more confident in who they are.

It's Okay to Ask for Help

Perhaps the most important part of Michelle's message is recognizing that it is okay to talk about your feelings.

You don't have to appear strong every moment.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

And you don't have to deal with difficult feelings alone.

Talking with a parent, trusted family member, teacher, counselor or another trusted adult can be an important first step when something doesn't feel right.

As Michelle reminds other young people in her message:

You matter more than you know.

Resources for Latino Teens and Families

If you are a teenager struggling emotionally—or you're a parent, friend or family member concerned about a young person—support and resources are available.

Visit YouMatterMoreThanYouKnow.com to learn more about the campaign and find resources created to support Latino youth.

At Quinceañeras Magazine, we will continue celebrating the beauty of the quinceañera tradition while also creating spaces where the girls behind those celebrations can build confidence, community and their own voices.

Because the most beautiful part of a quinceañera will always be the girl becoming confident in who she is.
